As Salaam Alaikum

I just want to share a reflection from our upcoming lesson "what is a religion" which will be available soon in our Islam Intensive and Ethical Living programs.

The modern world has secularized the very concept of a religion, and too many of us have internalized this. We look at religions as personal beliefs and private acts of worship. The reality is that Islam is much more than that. Islam is a worldview, a way of life, an ideology, and a religion all in one. It is the most comprehensive system of living in the world today. Islam governs everything: politics, war, family, gender roles, hygiene, environment, economics, and spirituality.

The problem that many of us have is that we limit Islam to just a religion. In doing so, we allow other ideologies and worldviews to impact our hearts. This is why many people's ideas area mixture of Islamic teachings with liberalism, secularism, feminism, or other man-made ideologies. To fully embrace and appreciate Islam, we must shed other ideologies, and "enter into submission completely". It is only when we do that, we will then see the true beauty of the teachings of Islam.
